Thailand liveaboard diving - Similan islands and Hin Daeng
Thailand liveaboard trips are generally 4 day safaris leaving from and returning to Phuket on Thailand's west
coast.
Thailand diving is very popular and the quality of boats vary greatly from small wooden boats and sailing yachts to large motor cruisers.
The prices for diving in Thailand also vary greatly but you generally get what you pay for and so if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Thailand liveaboards normally cost from around 250 -350 Us dollars a day for a decent boat dependant on such things as the size of the boat, cabins, en-suite bathrooms, air-con etc. There are 2 main destinations visited by the liveaboards in Thailand, the Similan islands in the north and Hin Daeng in the south.

Similan islands diving trips to the north of Phuket generally last 4 days and include diving at Richelieu rock, Koh Bon and Koh Tachai further north. Hin Daeng diving safaris to the South of Phuket take place over the weekend and include diving in Koh Phi Phi and also Koh Ha featuring some unusual macro and great caves.
Southern Thailand diving is a great experience as you get to dive at Phi Phi island when all the daily divers and crowds have gone home.
Fifty-two miles north-west of Phuket islands on Thailand's west coast lies the Koh Similan Marine National Park. This is an archipelago of nine granite islands offering some of the best diving in south East Asia. Similan islands liveaboard diving provides a huge variety of topography and boast the richest variety and abundance of reef fish in Thailand.
During southern Thailand's hot season in February, March and April, the rising sea temperature causes a boom in plankton levels. This in turn attracts whale sharks and manta rays to be drawn to the Similan islands to feed.
The eastern Similans dive sites feature lush coral gardens with sea anemones and a host of colourful reef fish. Seas are calm and dives are at moderate depths, suitable for all levels of divers and also for snorkellers. Western dive sites feature enormous granite boulders, descending down to 40 meters with swim throughs, caves and tunnels, making the diving more challenging. Currents provide nutrients for a colourful variety of soft corals and seafans.
Above sea level, the islands are covered in lush rainforest, and there is an abundance of bird life.
Hin Daeng, meaning red rock in the Thai language, is an open water sea mount south of Phuket covered in red soft corals hiding some excellent macro life such a ghost pipefish, mantis shrimp, harlequin shrimp, frogfish and brightly coloured nudibranches. Hin Muang (Purple rock), it's neighbour, has a covering of purple soft corals, not as pretty as Hin Daeng it is famous for it's sitings of large pelagics such as manta rays and possibly whale sharks. We plan for 4 dives on Saturday, 3 at Hin Daeng and Hin Muang followed by a night dive at Koh Ha. Sunday begins with 2 dives at Koh Ha to explore the chimney and the cathedral and then 2 dives in Koh Phi Phi with a chance to visit the village and take in the sites in the evening followed by an over-night cruise back to Phuket departing the boat on Monday morning.
